The World of Warcraft Niche: Making Money from WoW blogs

World of warcraft

World of Warcraft (WoW) is the world’s No. 1 massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) published by Blizzard Entertainment, the same creators of the equally famous Starcraft game.

To give you an idea of how popular this game is, as of January 22, 2008, World of Warcraft has more than 10 million subscribers worldwide — 7 years after it was first released. There are more 2 million subscribers in Europe, more than 2.5 million in North America, and about 5.5 million in Asia.

Subscribers are players who play a monthly fee to play the game, aside from the one time purchase of the software. The fee is at an average of $15 a month. Despite the fees involved, and the availability of free online games elsewhere, the sheer number of paying subscribers is proof that people are willing to pay money for the game, and this is a good sign that this is a very profitable niche.

As a blogger, online marketer or webmaster, how can you make money from World of Warcraft?

There are a lot of ways you can make money from WoW.

Affiliate commissions from software/gaming guide sales

First is through affiliate commissions from sale of the game software. While Blizzard does not have an affiliate program (Google: “Blizzard affiliate program) for software sales, third party vendors do have affiliate programs, like Amazon (see World of Warcraft – Amazon ). Among items for sale on Amazon are the Wow Classic, the latest World of Warcraft Cataclysm Expansion pack, WoW Battlechest which includes The Burning Crusade expansion pack, the WoW Wrath of the Lich King Collectors Edition, World of Warcraft Prepaid Time cards, WoW gaming mouse, keyboards and headsets and even World of Warcraft toys, action figures and gaming guides.

On Clickbank there are a number of WoW gaming guides and ebooks that pay generous commissions. These include Warcraft Rockstar, Warcraft Formula (membership site), Warcraft Reputations by T-Dub, Warcraft Conquest, Zygor Alliance & Horde World of Warcraft Leveling & Dailies Guides, Dugi Warcraft Leveling / Dailies / Dungeon / Profession / Achievement, Reaching Gold Cap : WoW Schools and a lot more.

Clickbank tip: When looking for a World of Warcraft guide to promote, take note of the product’s gravity, which is the number of distinct affiliates who earned a commission by referring a paying customer to the vendor’s products. The higher the gravity, the better. But also look at the quality of the product and the sales page. Do not hesitate to ask the vendor a copy to review its quality.

Make money with ads/Adsense on World of Warcraft blogs and forums

Another way of making money from WoW is by creating websites that cater to the market. You can create a blog or build a forum around the topic of World of Warcraft. Then create a Facebook fan page, a Twitter account and Youtube channel for your site to build traffic. Once you build traffic, you can slowly introduce advertisements such as banners and affiliate links from Amazon and Clickbank. You can also add Google Adsense to your site, and also connect with existing WoW sites to offer them paid advertising space.

Create World of Warcraft guides and sell them

If you decided to create a blog or forum about World of Warcraft, you will inevitably become familiar with the game. But you really have to take interest on the game to really have authority on the subject. You can even buy the game, install it and experience the gameplay. After all, you won’t be able to write a guide if you don’t even play the game.

Creating a product such as a WoW game guide or leveling guide is no easy task, so do not go this route if you don’t intend to spend a lot of time getting familiar with the WoW “universe”. This would require buying the game, playing it, reading the official guides, reading blogs and hanging out in the forums.

You might have to hire experts or specialists to help you create the guide. You can find them in forums, or you can contact a blogger who writes about WoW and offer him a joint venture to create and market a gaming guide. You can then sell the guide form your own site, or use marketplaces such as Clickbank or Paydotcom to facilitate the selling and also have affiliates promoting your product.
